The Standard Board of Directors Nomination Call Is Open!

Applications are open June 8 - June 27, 2023.

The Canadian Black Standard is looking for dynamic and skilled Marketing leaders from across Canada to join our volunteer Board of Directors. The Standard is seeking nominations to fill the following 4 positions: 

  • Chair - 1 Open 

  • Secretary (Project Manager) - 1 Open 

  • Director, Corporate Relations - 1 Open 

  • Director, Marketing and Communications - 1 Open 

  • Treasurer  – Robin Esale seeking re-election 

We are looking for phenomenal Black womxn who are active in the marketing sector, are passionate about addressing systemic barriers to employment advancement and the inclusion of Canadian Black womxn in marketing, and eager to put their enthusiasm and expertise to work on a national scale. These positions are open for one-year terms starting in July/August 2023. 

Our Story

In 2020 the culture shift and global reckoning following the murder of George Floyd called together 13 black womxn (most of whom had never met one another). These womxn came together to be "The Standard '' for the professional advancement and support of Black womxn in the marketing sector. 

Our team both past and present is a collective of Canadian Black womxn with decades of global experience in marketing as both corporate leaders and maverick entrepreneurs. Our combined experience addressing systemic barriers and achievements in the industry, makes us uniquely qualified to lead the charge and direct change.

Through 2022 and 2023 the organization has focused its efforts on establishing a strong framework and processes for governance working with professional organizations such as Managing Matters and Redstone to support these efforts. The Standard has also increased its membership, brand equity and online presence through year-round virtual and live events, as well as built community engagement across social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn. This early success is rooted in strong corporate partnerships with best-in-class organizations such as RBC, MLSE, NBA Canada and Blake’s. 

We are excited for The Standard’s next chapter and what it will bring for membership growth, establishing a national presence and building on the frameworks and processes established over the last few years. We are seeking dynamic and skilled marketing leaders from across Canada to join our volunteer Board of Directors and play a key role in this exciting next phase for The Standard. 

Our Mission

The Standard is Canada’s premier networking and advocacy platform addressing systemic barriers to employment advancement and the inclusion of Black Canadian womxn in the sector of marketing.

Our Vision

The Standard is a community that provides Black Canadian womxn with a successful network helping them to cultivate their career path in an accountable industry committed to intentional action.

Procedure

Any Member, or person willing and able to become a Member, of the Association can nominate themselves for election to the Board of Directors.  

This year The Standard is actively seeking applications from those who:

  • Reside in Canada, particularly those outside of Ontario 

  • Black - African/Caribbean

  • Womxn

  • Have strong corporate relationships

  • French speaking an asset

With strong skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Board and governance 

  • Business operations 

  • Leadership 

  • Strategic planning 

  • Risk management and policy development 

  • Diversity and inclusion champion 

  • Marketing and communications 

  • Finance

  • Legal 

The nomination form will include: 

Contact information, a biographical summary with relevant experience (300 words maximum), and questions about demographics, skills and experiences. Should there be two or more nominations submitted for a position, an election process will proceed for those nominees and the nomination application information will be circulated during an election process to the current membership.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates are active in the Marketing and Communications sector in Canada, have a passion for advancing and empowering Canadian Black womxn in the Marketing sector, and eager to put their enthusiasm and expertise to work on a national scale. They are also individuals who are 18 years of age or older; are not incapable and have not been so declared so by a court in Canada or elsewhere, is an individual, and does not have the status of bankrupt. A director may but need not be a member.

Term Limits and Responsibilities

  • Board terms are for one (1) year, and if qualified, shall be eligible for re-election at the Annual General Meeting. All terms will take effect at the end of the Annual General Meeting at which they were elected.

  • Board meetings are done by video conference calls and a regular schedule will be established by the incoming board members. 

Board member responsibilities include:

  • Establishing policies and monitoring implementation with the goal of leading the organization toward its mission and vision;

  • Chairing, or participating in, committees such as the election; finance and audit; corporate relations/partnerships; marketing and communications; and member experience committees;

  • Supporting and encouraging opportunities for board development and feedback;

  • Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings;

  • Approving annual budgets and audit reports;

  • Representing The Standard to stakeholders and acting as an ambassador for the organization.
